Fibroma in Maine Deer - 2008
Usually transmitted from one deer to another by insects, although direct contact with an infected deer
can spread the virus amongst local deer population. A permit was issued to harvest this animal.

We spotted this unusual deer in my field in early January, 2008. We watched her for a few days and was able to get some pictures of her. I also glassed her and saw these large, fleshy, lumps hanging off her face. On the third day in a row of her hanging right around my property, I got a good look at her and saw that her left eye was affected by the bigger lump. I contacted a Warden and a Maine State Biologist and showed them the pics. Right away the Biologist diagnosed these as "Fibroma" or hairless tumors. A major cause of this is biting insects. A desision was made to put the deer down and a few days later I put her out of her misery. Both tumors were infected and the worst was yet to come as her eye socket was exposed to the elements by the weight of the biggest tumor. Extensive tests have been done and the meat is edible. These tumors can be transmitted from one deer to another but not from a deer to humans or deer to pets, canines, etc. Fibroma is quite common where there is a large concentration of deer
